Empowering Learners Through Sustainability: Stockport Continuing Education Service's Charity Shop Initiative

A Green Initiative with a Heart

At Stockport Continuing Education Service, we're dedicated to providing a diverse range of learning pathways that not only enhance skills but also contribute to the betterment of our community. One such initiative, our sustainability-themed charity shop, is a testament to our commitment to both education and environmental responsibility.

A Learner-Led Venture

The brainchild of Jonathan Colquitt, our Learner Services Manager, the charity shop was envisioned as a platform for learners to gain valuable work experience while making a positive impact. By taking on roles in stock control, display setup, customer service, and till operation, learners are developing essential skills that will boost their employability.

Phillippa Walker, our Site Manager, played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life. Her resourcefulness and dedication were instrumental in transforming unused materials into functional shop fixtures. By repurposing discarded items, Phillippa not only reduced waste but also created a visually appealing and efficient space.

A Community-Focused Endeavor

Basma Umair, one of our talented learners, has been actively involved in the shop's operations. Her commitment to learning and volunteering has not only contributed to the shop's success but has also opened doors to new opportunities. Basma is now employed as a Learning Support Assistant, further emphasizing the transformative power of education and hands-on experience.

The charity shop has already made a significant impact, raising £445 to date. At the end of each term, learners will have the opportunity to vote on which local charity will benefit from the proceeds, fostering a sense of community involvement and social responsibility.

A Sustainable Future

By promoting recycling, reducing waste, and supporting local charities, our charity shop initiative aligns with our broader sustainability goals. It empowers learners to become active participants in creating a greener future while equipping them with the skills and confidence to succeed in the workplace.

We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our learners, staff, and volunteers. Their dedication and hard work have made this initiative a resounding success. As we continue to innovate and adapt, we remain committed to providing opportunities that inspire, educate, and empower our community.

Anyone wishing to donate items for the shop can drop them off at reception at Continuing Education Service, Daw Bank, SK3 0EQ.
